Still getting ahead of my schedule, so here’s a mix of vaguely current eventsy gags. If you don’t know that Jeff Zients is the White House Chief of Staff, congrats on having a healthier news diet than mine. I was never a fan of Ron Klain, but he looks like Marx compared to Zients’ policy preferences.
The shitty contract forced onto rail workers by Congress and the President that contains zero (0) paid sick days is going to cause a lot of problems. Either immediately to the supply chain if a wildcat strike happens, or electorally when unions abandon Democrats for abandoning them.
“B-b-but it was Republicans who voted against it!” some might say. And that’s what Democrats planned on by decoupling sick leave from the rest of the bill. I typed a version of this on Mastodon, where I’ve been dabbling since my Musk-induced departure from Twitter. Hive Social is phone only, and not very secure, so I’m not doing much there besides parking my name.
Decoupling sick days from the rest of the rail bill was done by the Democratic House, so they could blame Senate Republicans while pleasing rail barons.
The antitrust thing could be about Ticketmaster flubbing Taylor Swift tickets, Amazon, cable companies, or almost literally anything else that sucks in this country.
Will there be consequences for the classified material Trump kept at Mar-a-Lago? Probably not, but it is still very funny. Better than him actually killing a guy on 5th Avenue and nothing happening.
I haven’t been watching the January 6th Committee’s hearings. Mainly because we all know it was a failed coup, but also, as far as I know, I don’t have any power to do anything about them.
There was an unveiling ceremony for a new Nancy Reagan stamp at the White House this week. Combined with Biden’s claims of McConnell and other Republicans being reasonable, I’m not too confident that tonight’s insurrection hearing will have much effect on stopping our slide into fascism.
This marks twenty years of me making fake Valentine’s cards for cartoons. I might’ve missed several years when I was on the NYT grind, so don’t quote me on that.
I had a cold this week that was surprisingly not COVID. While I don’t recommend getting sick, any excuse to avoid following the news makes for a better week.
While obviously not the worst thing about 2021 by far, “Choo-choo” the Herky Jerky Dancer from Mr. Show participating in Trump’s coup attempt really sums up the year that would follow. Seemingly normal Americans hellbent on making the most destructive and selfish choices that made all our lives worse.
… we have a responsibility to everyone whose lives we ended, brutalized with 20 years of a pointless war started out of the mass-insanity that blanketed this country after 9/11. (An insanity that drove me to counter it by starting this dumb career.) But the war had to be ended. It was obvious to millions of us before it even started.
And I know I’m guilty of the same thing I’m mocking Trump and cable news for doing. I think the last time I did a cartoon on our longest quagmire was several years ago.
