It was a long weekend after a month’s worth of news happened on Monday and Tuesday. I went to the beach to look at some cool shells and eat seafood, but I shall return, barely refreshed to draw comics about whatever new horrors await us on the other side of the holiday weekend.

I usually save the horror parodies for Halloween, but this summer’s news has been inviting them ahead of schedule. This usually is the time of year studios put out at least a few of their new spooky stuff in theaters so they can double-dip digital rentals in October.
McConnell froze up in the middle of a press conference a couple weeks ago, and I’ve learned not to get my hopes up. I’m going to be adding more gruesome ailments to my depiction of him and the fucker’s gonna outlive me; like some kind of mashup between the picture of Dorian Gray and the dude on the game Operation.

Here is a sort of a sequel to this cartoon from last August. DeSantis keeps escalating his fascist grip on Florida while national Democrats are spending their time crowing about “bipartisan” infrastructure and doing fuck-all else.
While I doubt DeSantis has national appeal, ceding one of our largest state’s populace to his goonish whims is less than ideal. “Just VOTE!” when the guy you want to be voted out has already disenfranchised his way into landslide re-elections.

A hodge podge of topical things.
The shitty contract forced onto rail workers by Congress and the President that contains zero (0) paid sick days is going to cause a lot of problems. Either immediately to the supply chain if a wildcat strike happens, or electorally when unions abandon Democrats for abandoning them.
“B-b-but it was Republicans who voted against it!” some might say. And that’s what Democrats planned on by decoupling sick leave from the rest of the bill. I typed a version of this on Mastodon, where I’ve been dabbling since my Musk-induced departure from Twitter. Hive Social is phone only, and not very secure, so I’m not doing much there besides parking my name.
Decoupling sick days from the rest of the rail bill was done by the Democratic House, so they could blame Senate Republicans while pleasing rail barons.
The antitrust thing could be about Ticketmaster flubbing Taylor Swift tickets, Amazon, cable companies, or almost literally anything else that sucks in this country.

Florida governor Ron DeSantis and Republicans in general have spent years demonizing teachers and cutting their funding, and are now dealing with teacher shortages as the school year begins. They’re sending cops and troops in to fill the vacancies, which I’m sure will end well.
One thing I’ve learned the last year or so of drawing this guy is that he’s always doing a third-rate Trump impression. He went to fancy schools, and can never nail it without adding a car dealership vibe to Trump’s awfulness.
Impression critique aside, he’s a fascist actively planning to steal elections. And unfortunately, Florida still has a lot of electoral votes that could decide the fate of the entire country.

Republican states are wilding out with anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-trans, and anti-everyone-who-isn’t-them bills. With a Supreme Court ready to rubber stamp them, the only legislative way to stop them is for the Democratically controlled federal government to pass a law.
That’s not going to happen, so it’s up to those of us not targeted by these garbage laws to protest them and offer aid and support to their victims.

The latest culture war Republicans came up with to distract from their obstruction is yet another racist dog whistle. And this one also lets them scaremonger about elitist college professors and students.
Opposing this horseshit is usually a waste of time to distract from talking about popular issues that would make Republicans look bad. But when it turns into actual fascist laws like Florida’s Mandatory College Ideology Registration, I dunno. I don’t think we’re gonna argue or even vote our way out of this descent into fascism.
