Final Climate Warning Signs

The week began with the IPCC’s dire report about climate change. And my Nib cartoon for the week also covered it:

I know defeatism is not cool and we’re supposed to take this warning to be spurred into demanding action from our government, but have you met our government?

We’re living in the disaster right now, and Biden is urging OPEC to pump more oil. Not sure the Sunrise Movement is on that fossil’s agenda.

Now I’m off to endure the third or fourth heat wave of Boston’s summer.

Justice Breyer, the Scrivener

I’m not usually an optimist, but the balance of the Supreme Court is just a Clarence coronary and a Kavanaugh DUI fatality away from being restored. Those odds are diminished if Breyer pulls an Anthony Kennedy and sticks around to let a Republican president pay off his kids’ debts for the opportunity to appoint his successor.

Maybe it’s ageist, but the last time hoping an ancient justice clung to life didn’t work out so well. Breyer can do whatever it is Sandra Day O’Connor’s been up to. (Just Googled, she’s still alive at 91.)

Re-Updated CDC Guidance

Read the comic on Patreon.

I did the first version of this cartoon almost exactly three months ago, when the CDC said the vaccinated could unmask indoors, which relied on the honor system. In America. Where a third of the country won’t even agree the pandemic exists.

It was a bad idea then, and it took the Delta Variant to become the predominant strain for them to finally reverse their decision. The people who need to follow that advice the most won’t, and now here we are.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and I won’t be drawing a third in this series for Halloween, but I doubt it.

Pandemic Summer Games

We had a month when it seemed like the vaccines were turning the tide on the pandemic, before the vaccine-ignorant let the Delta Variant run rampant in their dumb lungs.

Provincetown, MA is having rapid increases in infections, even among the vaccinated. Thankfully deaths aren’t following suit, but it seems obvious our honor system experiment was as doomed as all of us who kept our masks on indoors assumed it would be.

Incredible Billionaire Adventures

The pandemic’s still going (and worsening), half the country’s on fire, and the other half’s alternating between floods and heat waves every other week. This as the backdrop for billionaires racing to recreate something the Soviets first accomplished (Sorry, Alan Shepard and John Glenn.) almost 60 years ago doesn’t say much for the free market’s ability to conquer space.

Fox Weather Channel

Pretty neat that every cable subscription underwrites Murdoch’s trash that’s been undermining democracy for 25+ years.

As for actual weather news, my phone’s been telling me to prepare for lots of flooding tomorrow due to Elsa’s remnants. If that’s the worst weather we get this summer, I’ll consider myself lucky.

Republicans’ Uncritical Race Stories

Read the comic on Patreon.

The latest culture war Republicans came up with to distract from their obstruction is yet another racist dog whistle. And this one also lets them scaremonger about elitist college professors and students.

Opposing this horseshit is usually a waste of time to distract from talking about popular issues that would make Republicans look bad. But when it turns into actual fascist laws like Florida’s Mandatory College Ideology Registration, I dunno. I don’t think we’re gonna argue or even vote our way out of this descent into fascism.

Anyway, Have a Summah!
