2024’s Climate Records

We’re about to have a heat wave here in the Northeast, which will be minor compared to the heat waves happening elsewhere around the globe so far this summer. Ocean temps are already shattering records held since … last year, and hurricane season is only officially two weeks old.

Locally, ocean temps are still too chilly for people who didn’t grow up in New England (AKA my spouse), but the swimming season here is already a month longer than when I was a kid forty years ago.

2023 New Year’s Resolutions

I’m abstaining from making any predictions about 2023. Not for lack of any ideas where things are headed, but because I don’t want to be too much of a holiday party pooper.

I’ll let COVID, RSV, and flu do that.

Climate Coping Strategies

The northern hemisphere is engulfed in record-breaking heatwaves, reservoirs are drying up, and nothing seriously addressing climate is coming out of DC within my lifetime.

So I self-soothed by finally embracing 5″ inseams and tank tops. Maybe all that extra unsightly pasty skin will force Congress to act.

Climate Conference Swag Bag

The 26th United Nations climate conference is wrapping up today. China and the US made a pinky swear promise today to do something in the future, so maybe this whole cartoon is moot and the climate will be fine now.

Final Climate Warning Signs

The week began with the IPCC’s dire report about climate change. And my Nib cartoon for the week also covered it:

I know defeatism is not cool and we’re supposed to take this warning to be spurred into demanding action from our government, but have you met our government?

We’re living in the disaster right now, and Biden is urging OPEC to pump more oil. Not sure the Sunrise Movement is on that fossil’s agenda.

Now I’m off to endure the third or fourth heat wave of Boston’s summer.

Secondary Climate Emergencies

Read the comic on Patreon.

We just had a lengthy heat wave here in Boston. This year’s droughts are going to make last year’s wildfires look like nothing. New records for carbon in the atmosphere are being set every week.

And the infrastructure bill that may or may not happen is having all climate mitigation efforts stripped out of it.

Oh, yeah, and the pandemic is still not under control, despite what it feels like here in America.

See you next week with more jokes!
