Transphobic Times

The New York Times’s obsessive and biased coverage of trans people has helped foment the recent rapid rise in anti-trans legislation and violence. It is so bad, a group of current and former NYT contributors composed a reasoned letter addressing their concerns and naturally it’s more well written than anything I could write here. I added my name as one of the 1,000+ signatories, along with over 20,000+ readers.

As the letter points out, this is nothing new for the New York Times. They’ve always preferred the view from nowhere, when not bending over backwards to appease a right-wing that wants them dead.

Another example of their awful judgement is that they published my cartoons for five years. If I was still cashing their checks, I’d probably be let go after sending a rough draft of this for copyediting.

IDENTIFIED Aerial Phenomena

Balloon panic is in its second week, and we’re probably a week away from a drone strike on a science fair. I can see my apartment on Google Street View, so a spy balloon would have to float through my window to invade my privacy any further.

Neither party wants focus on the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. Republicans because they’re against any remedies such as regulations or paying rail workers decently, and Democrats because they just busted a rail strike that was seeking to improve the very conditions that led to this crash.

Joe “I’m a train guy” Biden’s next choo-choo photo-op is gonna be awkward.

This Congress is barely a month old and already beyond parody. I suppose I’ll continue mocking them until the last checks on their power are gone and our country completes its final spin down the toilet bowl.

I didn’t watch the State of the Union, since that’s always old news by the end of the week it happens. All the genius pundits say it’s the unofficial start of the 2024 campaign, so say goodbye to any meaningful legislation getting passed through this bunch.

I watched The Menu instead. Highly recommended and not just because of the shoutout to my hometown of Brockton, MA.

Ron DeSantis’s Book Club

Here is a sort of a sequel to this cartoon from last August. DeSantis keeps escalating his fascist grip on Florida while national Democrats are spending their time crowing about “bipartisan” infrastructure and doing fuck-all else.

While I doubt DeSantis has national appeal, ceding one of our largest state’s populace to his goonish whims is less than ideal. “Just VOTE!” when the guy you want to be voted out has already disenfranchised his way into landslide re-elections.
