Hegseth’s Texts

After two month’s of what would be the end of any other administration’s scandals, the one that seems to have stuck is Pete Hegseth communicating war crimes through insecure channels. The war crimes themselves are the same stuff we’ve been doing for a quarter century, but the Department of Defense at least tried to wait a while before letting the media know about it.

Hegseth was grossly unqualified from the get-go, and his boozy stink should be on every senator who voted to confirm him, or anyone in this fascist cabinet. Another thing this leak illustrates is how little Trump is involved in his own administration. These goons are free to do whatever freak shit they want while the demented president golfs or watches TV.

Department of Failed State Travel Advisories

We’re just two months into this administration and the horrors at the border and within continue to escalate. Tourists from close allies are getting sent to the gulags we’ve previously reserved for refugees who are desperate to get here to seek asylum. Residents with green cards or visas are getting arrested, detained, and even deported for their speech. And others are being rounded up without due process and sent to slave labor camps in El Salvador.

This is not a great environment for jokes. My mind keeps going to the fact that all that separates myself from these current victims is my tacky little U.S. passport. Any CBP or ICE thug can take it and instantly render me and anyone they don’t like a stateless individual with no rights.

I don’t have plans (or the budget) for international travel any time soon, but I don’t have to go anywhere for them to claim jurisdiction over me or two thirds of the population. The War on Terror has come home, we’re all the targets, and if you can’t call it fascism, you won’t until you’re the one getting stripped and hosed down in a cage.

Democratic Defense

Chuck Schumer announced that he’d vote for cloture (which is effectively a yes vote for its passing) on a continuing resolution to avoid a budget shortfall. He and other feckless Senate Democrats will claim this is necessary to avoid a government shutdown. But those of us with eyes and two brain cells to rub together know the federal government is already shutdown due to the illegal withholding of congressionally appropriated funds by the White House and Elon Musk’s DOGE. Causing a budget impasse was the Democrats’ best shot at having any leverage and they blew it.

To Hakeem Jeffries’ credit, he called out Schumer’s move as complicity with the Trump regime. Not sure what else he’s been up to for the past two months that disproves his depiction in this cartoon, though.

Before anyone gives the ol’ “They’re the minority! There’s nothing they can do!” razzle dazzle, there’s plenty of parliamentary shenanigans that can gum up the works of the Republican bulldozers. These two are choosing not to use them for reasons that get more dubious as one crisis after another happens every week of this nightmare administration.

Canada’s Countermeasures

Read the comic on Patreon.

Trump’s tariffs have been on and off again several times over the past few weeks, with threats of annexation of various former allies sprinkled throughout. Each country we’ve turned our back on deserves a full comic, and maybe I’ll tackle them all eventually, but my proximity to Canada guaranteed they’d be first.

My mother’s grandmother was Quebecois, and made the ultimately unfortunate decision to move to New Hampshire. I’ve crossed that border many times and it’s always been a pleasant formality. Now I don’t think I can go up there without apologizing so much it’d make a Canadian blush.

Even if the tariffs never go into effect, the constant threat of them has caused tremendous instability and retaliatory tariffs that are tanking what’s left of the economy after DOGE hobbled it. Thankfully, the 401K I don’t have remains stable at $0.
