Unlike Frosty the Snowman, the Trump campaign the GOP brought to life won’t go away when the temperatures rise. We’re just over a month away from the primaries and we’ll find out if Trump’s poll numbers translate into votes and make the GOP’s decades of implicit racism explicit.

Trump’s overtly bigoted campaign is just a spicier version of the hate the G.O.P. has been serving up for decades. And the base is eating it up to the dismay of the Republican establishment, who prefer to rile up the base just enough to enact tax cuts and dismantle social services.
We’re just weeks away from 2016, when the primaries begin and these monsters get even nastier. If that’s even possible.

Ben Carson has a zany theory about the pyramids. Even if you interpret everything in the Bible literally, you have to make some pretty giant leaps to get the idea that Joseph built the pyramids to store the Pharaoh’s grain. But facts aren’t really important to anybody running for the Republican nomination.
For some reason the permalink page to this week’s comic isn’t working, so you have to read the comic in the NYT’s slideshow.
Last week’s Democratic debate was a welcome relief from the GOP train wrecks. While light on foreign policy, it was a substantial discussion of what’s at stake in the upcoming election. 15 million tuned in, the most for any Democratic debate, which is great free advertising for a party that’s been struggling for air time against the Trump Show™.
The next three debates won’t get that number of eyeballs combined. In a bid to pave the way for Hillary, DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz scheduled them all on weekends and possibly in the middle of the night between infomercials. I’ll never know because I spend my weekends doing fun things and staying as far away from the news-cycle grind of the workweek.

With Trump leading Republican polls with a full-blown racist nationalist platform of slurs and insults, the rest of the field is following his lead and it’s ugly. Stripped of the dog whistles and coded language employed by Republicans for decades, the hatefulness of that party toward immigrants is now obvious to anyone, especially those who will be voting in the general election.

Last week President Obama and the E.P.A. revealed the final rules of their Clean Power Plan that finally attempts to set limits on our suicidal consumption of carbon and other greenhouse gases. They mostly require individual states to reach emission reduction targets by 2030.
These rules will be challenged for years by people who have the luxury to either buy themselves out of harm’s way or die before the disasters really start piling up. But if you or people you love will be alive at the end of this century, there’s no excuse for delaying actions that could prevent the disaster that awaits them.

The election is still very far away, and Donald Trump is sucking up all the media oxygen from every other candidate. He’s also leading the Republican field in the polls, which is hilarious. Claims that Trump is more extreme than his peers are untrue. He’s just not using the dog whistles and Luntz-speak to apply a veneer of respectability to his terrible impulses and “ideas.”
As a Star Trek nerd, I was deeply offended that Ted Cruz thinks Captain Kirk would be a Republican. Not only is this untrue, but Star Trek depicts a futuristic socialist interstellar government that has advanced beyond capitalism. Thankfully, Shatner shut him down:

I’m not going to San Diego Comic Con, but I’m hosting my own panel online, previewing a whole slate of new characters that may or may not appear in future comics. Hopefully Marvel buys the rights and beats these franchises into the ground so I can retire and not have to listen to anything Donald Trump says ever again.
