Olympic Con GamesThe Olympics are a traveling grift that seem to get worse every time they’re held. I’m glad we made a stink in Boston and forced Boston2024 to drop its bid, even if it sank my chances of seeing Ann Romney’s horse prance around in my neighborhood.

I’m more ambivalent towards sports doping. Sure, it’s bad, but it only affects the integrity of “amateur” sports, not the real lives of the people who get displaced by the games and the I.O.C.’s ridiculous whims.

The DNC's Unscheduled EventsThe other party’s having a convention this week. Instead of being outright racist and hateful, they are simply comically inept. It’s great to have choices in a democracy!

If you’re in Philly for the convention, check out The Nib’s HQ at 303 Cherry Street between 12 and 6pm. I won’t be there, but a lot of my friends will. I have a bunch of work at the space, including some swag you can take home.

The outcomes of both parties’ conventions are already known, but the Republicans are nominating someone who makes a reality show of everything he touches. I’ll be watching from home, with a sick bucket nearby.

7 Steps Toward Police ReformLast week, the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile gripped the nation and began another round of protests against police brutality. Then the brutal attack on Dallas police officers happened and everyone flipped out. I’m going to go out on a limb and say every murder is bad and deserves outrage. The tragedy of systemic, institutionalized, and rarely-prosecuted murders is that the sheer frequency of them makes us numb, and don’t make headlines unless a gruesome video goes viral on social media.

Policing After Utah V. StrieffThe understaffed Supreme Court session came to a close this week. The results were a mixed bag, but the Utah v. Strieff decision was the most egregious. It allows for illegally obtained evidence to be used against citizens. The majority said a cop’s instincts are good enough to get around the cumbersome bits of the Fourth Amendment that require probable cause and warrants.

The decision could also nullify over twenty years of Law & Order reruns.

Alternative Gun Control ProposalsThe mass shooting in Orlando has gotten lawmakers to do something beyond offering “thoughts and prayers.” Unfortunately, a lot of their proposals rely on the terror watch list, which is one of many bad ideas left over from the Bush II Administration. Remember them?

“No guns for terrorists” makes sense politically; but the list is just a collection of thousands of names of random people. If there was really any evidence, the FBI would make a big show of arrests and trials.
