The Democrats did even better than expected Tuesday night, giving Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries huge majorities in Congress and the power to finally start holding this administration accountable. Do I have confidence that they won’t squander the opportunity? Absolutely not.
A lot of the senators and representatives-elect agree and are already demanding a change in leadership for both chambers. Schumer could have an even larger majority if, as the primary recruiter of senate candidates, actually threw some support behind people like Angie Nixon in Florida. Hakeem Jeffries was hand-picked by Pelosi to be her successor, and with his big donors including the likes of Anduril, Palantir and AIPAC, I find it hard to believe he’d govern any differently than a non-MAGA Republican.
I don’t want to be a wet blanket, and it’s fun watching Republicans get shellacked for a change, but I’m old enough to have seen Democrats’ previous midterm wins turn into nothing more than a footnote in America’s descent into fascism. I’d love if these bozos prove me wrong, though!
