While the American Health Care Act passed the House, and waits for the Senate to do something with it, the funding that keeps Obamacare running is being pulled to justify its repeal. Despite its clunkiness, the Affordable Care Act was a vast improvement over what we had before.
Romneycare, which became Obamacare nationwide, provided me with affordable health insurance that I previously didn’t have access to as a freelancer. But last year I fell into the trap of making just enough money to lose the subsidies, and now I’m paying over $300 a month so some insurance company CEO can rake in millions. And that’s in Massachusetts, where enough insurance companies are in the markets to offer competitive pricing.
Maybe single-payer isn’t politically possible yet, but we’ll never get there if politicians keep shrugging their shoulders and ruling it out before even trying. Both Ryan Cooper and Emma Roller make a convincing case that the time for single-payer is now.
Finally, screw Joe Lieberman for killing the public option.

Paul Ryan finally presented the “replace” part of “Repeal and replace Obamacare,” and it’s pretty much a gift to the wealthy and insurance companies.
Good thing I wasn’t shocked. My heart couldn’t afford a doctor’s visit.

The Affordable Care Act (Which is the same as Obamacare, despite the fact that the two names get very different levels of support.) is going to be repealed. Its replacement is going to be our old way of letting more people die of preventable disease.
While an improvement over that, the ACA is far from great and should be improved and expanded. Politicians who deluded themselves into pretending the ACA was perfect and needed no improvements had a hard time selling that to the public who actually uses it. Single Payer is a goal that every campaign should champion. Save the “let’s stick to what’s politically possible” for the end of a debate. Starting from there is a loser’s game.

If there was any doubt that Martin Shkreli represents the rest of the for-profit healthcare industry, recent headlines removed it. Mylan’s gouging of Epi-Pens, and Aetna sulking away from Obamacare markets because they weren’t profitable enough are making quite the case for putting a public option into the Affordable Care Act.
The public option was originally in there, but removed to placate conservatives, who spent the past 6 years trying to repeal it anyway. Unless the House changes hands in November, a public insurance plan will remain a pipe dream and healthcare costs will keep going up. That’s good news if you happen to be a well-compensated healthcare CEO.
I’m not even going to pretend that single-payer will ever happen. Too much money’s at stake, and no number of lives can top that.
