I’m not traveling far for Thanksgiving, but I still have to get a cartoon done early for everyone who is.

It’s been a while since I did a cartoon even referencing COVID, but it is still out there thanks to everyone getting bored with mitigating it. I got my booster and still wear a mask when around sloppy strangers indoors. I recommend it to everyone who enjoys not getting sick.

Have a great long weekend if you’re lucky enough to not have to work retail during it!

Republican Textbook Fair

My birthday and the long weekend almost coincide, so I’m getting this out early. Stores are already past back-to-school season and stocked with Halloween junk, but it’s still summer to me and my poor beleaguered air conditioners.

The attempts by Republican-led states to rewrite history seems laughable, but we got everyone to forget a pandemic that’s still happening, so anything’s possible.

Ron DeSantis’s Back-to-School Rules

Florida governor Ron DeSantis and Republicans in general have spent years demonizing teachers and cutting their funding, and are now dealing with teacher shortages as the school year begins. They’re sending cops and troops in to fill the vacancies, which I’m sure will end well.

One thing I’ve learned the last year or so of drawing this guy is that he’s always doing a third-rate Trump impression. He went to fancy schools, and can never nail it without adding a car dealership vibe to Trump’s awfulness.

Impression critique aside, he’s a fascist actively planning to steal elections. And unfortunately, Florida still has a lot of electoral votes that could decide the fate of the entire country.

A shoe’s not at the center of a culture war … yet. Give it a day or two.

I’ve been reading short story anthologies during quarantine to keep things light. I just finished an Asimov one, but the next book on my nightstand is “The Grapes of Wrath.” That should be some good escapist fun that has nothing to do with our current situation.
